Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami
Last Friday, an earthquake and tsunami struck Indonesia, killing over 1,600 people. Nearly 1,000 people are feared buried in mud, and at least 70,000 people have been left homeless. The figures could be even higher. An on-site reporter says that rescuers don’t even know where to start digging. “They fear half of the population here is dead.”
We process so many numbers on a daily basis, that we often don’t think how each number represents an individual life; a person whose life has been destroyed by something they have no control over, and something that will change them forever. We ask you to take five minutes to think of the humans behind these numbers and to make duaa for them. Keep them in your prayers, for their lives have just been uprooted by this tragedy and may never be the same.
If you are able, please make a donation to trusted organisations that carry out rescue operations in Indonesia. There are children in need of food and shelter, and people in need of immediate medical attention, unable to get it due to the destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami. There area people buried alive, waiting to be found and rescued.
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) member charities and their Indonesian partners are working closely with national authorities to provide food, clean water, first aid and shelter, while helping survivors to cope with the trauma of the last few days.
As the full scale of devastation unfolds, they are ready to do even more, and with your help, support devastated communities in rebuilding their lives.
